i m an indian who grew up in a very well educated but lower middle class family from chandigarh, in north india.

kids under 10 in india have no rights. Period. If their parents are not around, they are left to be used and abused by their fellow countrymen. they are easy target.

Slapping is not even considered a crime in india. not even to a child.

Kids who are extremely sensitive and cowards, as perhaps I am, they leave the country and head for other places. They join the ranks of intelligent, educated, exodus generation who have contempt for india.

Kids who are extremely insensitive and brave, they grow up to be criminals or corrupt politicians treating their countrymen with same contempt as they were treated at one time or another.
They join the league of arrogant, spoilt brats of rich and powerful.

What you can do is write. Write so that those like me and most of your facebook friends who live a life of affluence and luxury in the west can gain a better understanding of what a struggle it is for most of the world's population just to survive. What you can do as one person is small. What you can do in raising awareness with your powerful friends has the potential to move political agendas. Thanks for sharing.

Good entry on the dark side of many developing countries. When I was in Viet Nam I initially bought something from every child vendor that approached me. After a week though I started to feel badgered by it and purchased less frequently.

I did not see the abuse you witnessed, just the sadness of seeing very small children sent out to work the streets.

Nice work, keep it up

Hi Ulrike,

Thanks for your feelings for that boy -- even if you had given him any money, probably it waould again have been taken from him -- maybe this was a new way of begging -- and his owners or so-called guardians will be some where around.

In such a case I would normally have bought him some food and stayed till he ate it.

Cheers
