That bottled water thing is a curse, one that afflicts us even here in North-American-tourist-mecca Tofino. Plastic bags are not far behind, though there are some initiatives in motion to address those.
You'd think if there was money to be made it would be a no-brainer, but even here it is left to the marginalized to collect water bottles and pop cans from the trash bins.
Basically, people act through habit and without thought most of the time -- this is not a criticism but an observation of how the human mind works. To change habitual behaviour, two things seem mandatory: self-interest and constant reminding, both of which serve to promote conscious action.
Keep reminding 'em, Ulrike.

I didn't find it too bad -- lots of nice roads, shade, stops, food.

Some days were less than 50 km and some were 60km. Assuming you ride a moderate 15km an hour, that's only four hours of cycling for the day!

Overall the road surfaces were excellent and the route well-guided. When I saw people struggling, it was because they weren't fully using all the gears that came with the 24-speed cycles provided.

I think as long as you start practicing/training NOW: riding at least an hour, riding a geared cycle, changing gears going up and down hills, carrying some weight.... you should be ok.

As a "foreigner" I found the heat a bit challenging, but as an experienced cyclist I know how to work around that -- one tip being: don't wear the heavy black T-shirts they give you! You'll notice in the photos I'm the only one not wearing one!
