Mid-November, I arrive at Aloysius’s house in Alto Porvorim, just north of Goa’s capital city, Panjim. The verandah of the 1970s-era house—my home base for the next 4 months—is splashed with fresh plaster. Uncle says it will have to dry thoroughly before the workers can give it a coat of paint before the rains.
