According to Wikipedia, “The Tata Nano is a city car manufactured by Tata Motors. Made and sold in India, the Nano was initially launched with a price tag of 100,000 (US$1,600) which was ultimately increased with time. Designed to lure India’s burgeoning middle classes away from two-wheelers, it received much publicity.”
Tata had just introduced this car when I left Goa in 2009. Rumour had it that part of their intention was to get families (father, mother, child, toddler) off motorbikes, and into a safe, steel shell. I wondered how it would affect the already-congested roadways.
What I discovered when I arrived in 2014 was that it was the influx of extra-large SUV vehicles such as Hummers that were really taking up all the space. Some Goa residents, it appeared, were doing very, very well.
